A typical spanking model?
Interesting things sometimes happen when I tell people I’m a spanking model.
Some folks decide to give me a little encouragement: “You aren’t really a typical spanking model, are you?”
Or, less encouragingly: “You? A porn model? I never would have guessed.” With an implication, I assume, that I’m far too squeaky-clean to fit into whatever image of a typical porn model they’ve built for themselves.
I wonder, what they think a typical porn model *is*. I’ve never met a “typical” one, especially because spanking porn requires such a different set of assets to vanilla porn (of which I have mostly theoretical knowledge).
Of course, if you’re youthful, slim and are capable of touching the floor with your fingertips when you bend over, you’ll do great as a spankee. But you don’t have to be all that slim, and not even all that youthful to make it in spanking porn. A great bottom, and an ability to withstand certain amount of pain is all you really need. And the greatness of your bottom is very subjective, anyway, and you’ll find that there’s an amazing array of women being engaged - and succeeding - in spanking media: all sorts of ages, shapes, accents.
The result of this relaxed attitude towards appearances is that the variations in who and what your girl on the painful end of the stick is may be even greater than with other types of sexy modelling. (I say “may be greater” because I don’t know for sure.) All this variety causes some difficulty if you want to figure out what can be “typical” about a spanking model.
I’ve talked to, have worked with and have heard of girls who are students - undergraduate or post-graduate, in every possible science or art - or housewives, or civil servants. I know a girl who manages a chain of shops, a kindergarten teacher; there are ballet dancers, there are writers. And, of course, there are full-times models, who have thrown in traditional employment for the sake of doing what they enjoy.
If I can’t say who is typical in the scene, I’d very much like to know what images the outsiders have built up about us.

Do you think there are many non-spanko models doing it but not enjoying it (at least the whacking part)?
There are lots of non-spankos in spanking films, yes. Larger companies, which have a greater pool of models, normally recruit vanilla girls, as far as I know.
If a kinky girl happens to show up asking for a job - that’s a bonus, but there are lots of non-kinky models.

Yeah I’ve been meaning to rant a bit about this. I was just listening to a guy tonight say that women aren’t really interested in porn and a lot of that I think reflects the way women are represented in porn. Spanking porn, as you point out, is more relaxed about the appearance of women and, as it happens, I would bet the number of women consuming spanking porn is reaching the same number of men (or will soon). Personally, I want to see women who look like me and I doubt I’m alone.

Outside the kink or outside the industry?
It still seems like the typical spanking model is slim, small breasted pre-pubescent looking. Not all of them by any means, but that does seem to dominate because that’s what a lot of guys are looking for. And that’s cool. But as a woman wanting to watch spanking porn, it’s not as appealing.

Natty, I was mostly talking about outsiders to the kink, though I’ve seen some amazingly assholish attitude from guys in the scene too.
And it’s always been guys. Girls have all been friendly. Actually, every spanko woman I’ve met in person here in the UK has at one point in her life made a spanking film or a set of stills, or has pro-subbed. Every One. It might have been 25 years ago, it might have been a one-off experience, but here you go: I haven’t met one UK female who didn’t see a piece of modelling action. So, no prejudiced babble was coming from them.
Men? OMG Spanking models are only in it for the cash, spanking models are all on drugs, spanking models who are not on drugs are in it because they’ve failed at everything else in life. A spanking model’s opinion can’t possibly be valid, because she’s got a hidden agenda. Marry a spanking model? No way! Some guys really take the Madonna/Whore divide into a new dimension. I wouldn’t mind so much if they didn’t say “present company excluded”. OK, thanks, I guess I’m an exception - what about my model friends, then?
I haven’t had quite as much trouble with vanilla outsiders because many people have no clue what a spanking model actually does, so there’s a lot less stereotyping going on.
