Pillow Talk: Interview with Razor Ryan
Sitting on the pillows with me today is Razor Ryan (also billed as John Ryan), a male spanking model known both for smacking women’s bottoms and having his own bottom smacked on film, while working with several spanking companies. Razor is a great favourite with kinky women everywhere, who have not failed to appreciate his rare good looks and his inspired style of lecturing miscreants. He has also shown admirable bravery under the strap, each time acquiring vivid marks which can be the envy of the female models everywhere.
Thank you for chatting to us, Razor. You know what my first question is going to be. How does a nice, clean-cut guy like you end up starring in spanking movies? Do tell.
I’d always been a fan of spanking and sensual D&S. (Dominance & Submission) In February 2004 I answered an ad for Real Spankings on their forum. The ad specified for male models to be filmed as subs and spankees. I’d always wondered what it would be like to be in a spanking film. Prior to that, the only spanking films & videos that I’d ever seen were from Real Spankings and Red Board Video. The shoot was quite a fun and painful experience for me. I found out that day, filming is quite a bit different than playing in private or at play parties. I still enjoy shooting for some of the finest companies involved in spanking and film.
Are you out to your family? What about your vanilla friends - if you even have any vanilla friends?
I don’t tell my vanilla friends about my fetish for spanking and D&S, or about filming. I will only discuss these things if the person whom I’m talking to expresses an interest in spanking and the like. My father is the only one in my family who knows what I do in private and on film. His view is that as long as I’m safe and happy, then that is all that matters. I will say that he cannot understand why there is no sex in spanking films. I did explain that there is indeed sexual activity in some spanking films, but only when it is appropriate for the given video or movie. He asked me if I’d had sex on camera. I explained that I hadn’t, but that I certainly wasn’t against it if a specific scene or movie should call for it and if the chemistry was strong enough between my lady co-star and myself.
You have made films both as a bottom and as a top. How have these two types of experiences differed for you?
Apples and oranges, Adele. We are looking at two completely different lines of thought. As a switch, I enjoy having the opportunity to be able to see and experience a scene from both a Dom’s and a sub’s point of view. As a sub, I only need to consider and listen to what I’m being told to do by the director and my Domme. It is difficult to maintain dialog while playing the role of a sub or spankee. There are times in which I have to mentally fight to keep my mind clear and out of subspace when a healthy amount of dialog is involved as I’m being punished. Now, when I am topping in a scene, some of my recent experiences as a bottom have taught me that it is better to go slow when conversing with my spankee. It’s important that she’s able to verbally respond to me when we’re sharing a long scene with plenty to say to one another. This means it’s not always a good approach for me to throw a bunch of one liners at her, with her answers mainly comprising of yes sir, no sir. It’s been my experience that most people who enjoy spanking videos and films, like knowing how both characters feel and what they have to say on an equal basis. So as a Top, it’s my job to be able to listen and respond to my spankee in a positive and active fashion and in direct correlation with the director’s wishes.
So, I take it, most of your work is not scripted? Have you ever had lines to learn before a shoot, or do you come up with your own dialogue? Do you rehearse?
Yes we do rehearse. We’ve had lines and scripts to memorize before the scene begins. Most of my work is scripted in conjunction with some partial improvisation as well.
Depending on the amount of improv which might be used, that is when a Domme or Disciplinarian needs to be careful in not overloading their spankee with too much verbal improvisation.
My male readers will kill me if I don’t ask you this: do you get paid for your work?
Yes I do. While shooting for Punished Brats and Shadow Lane, it’s been my experience and pleasure that both of these organizations are very generous and supportive of their models.
What implement are you most comfortable using? How about taking?
Leather straps are my favorites to use and to receive discipline with. The London Tanner makes some of the best leathers in the world. Ian’s reformatory strap, boudoir paddle and his double razor strop are my favorites. His implements are known for being well balanced and easy to use in regard to proper aim and follow through when swinging one of his creations.
In private life spanking can be quite an intense, intimate experience. Does filming it make it more or less so?
Adele, that is hard to say. Filming is completely different than playing in private as you yourself have experienced as well. I will say that filming has sharpened my skills in impromptu role play both as a Disciplinarian and as a sub during private play.
Do you ever worry about going too far when spanking a girl on camera?
Absolutely! It’s very important that the Disciplinarian is mindful of what his or her spankee can take and what she cannot. Having an idea as to what a woman is comfortable with in all aspects of the film is the most important. For a film to be successful, this concept not only applies to the spanking itself, but also the dialog in which we are sharing.
Have you ever been spanked so hard you had to call a stop to a scene?
I have safe worded in private and at play parties. Sometimes, I’m not always in the mood for a severe thrashing.
What are some of the things you will absolutely not do in a spanking movie?
My only hard limit is no CBT of any kind.
Do you ever get any nice fan mail?
Yes I have. It’s always nice to hear from people who enjoy the videos and films I’ve starred in. Feed back from the audience is very important. I also listen very closely to others who also work in the spanking film industry as to how they feel regarding my performances. But the most important aspect here is the people (a website’s target audience or clientele) who pay to see the websites I’ve performed on, along with those who buy the videos and DVDs as well. They are the ones who truly dictate as to rather or not a scene or movie was a success.
Have you ever gone on to have a relationship with someone you’ve filmed with?
Well, I do maintain friendships with ladies whom I’ve filmed with and others whom I aspire to film with. But, I’ve never actually dated another spanking model. I will say that there are a few leading ladies in our industry whom I’d love to be involved with.
As a viewer, what kind of spanking movies do you like to watch?
I enjoy a storyline which maintains an equal amount of dialog between a Dominant and their spankee. I enjoy knowing how the subbe feels and how she expresses herself. It is natural for a Domme or Disciplinarian to have a whole salvo of lines and projected thoughts at the ready. What I find entertaining, is to watch and listen to the subbe express herself regardless if she’s being compliant or attempting to top from the bottom.
Which spanking movie do you wish you could have starred in?
I have three that come to mind actually. I would love to have been the prison deputy on duty during your intake scenes on Bars and Stripes. That would’ve been a lot of fun for the both of us. Secondly, I would’ve liked to have had the cameo role as the plumber in Shadow Lane’s movie Desperate Measures. Thirdly, on Firm Hand Spanking I enjoyed Samantha Woodley’s Discipline program. It would be a considerable privilege to co-star with her in a similar series.
And the traditional final question: Is there any question you wish I’d asked you?
None that I can think of Adele. But my question for you is; When might you consider flying to the U.S? I can think of at least five filming companies here who would love to have the privilege of filming you. *winks*

As usual, I’ve asked the readers to submit some questions, and the best of them got answers.
From Sol: What would you advise a guy who wants to do what you do?
When you find an ad or model call which interests you, the first thing is to become familiar with the site in question if you’re not already. If you feel that you might fit the role in question, then look for what the site owner or producer is asking for. IE: your age, weight, height, hair & eye color. Also, consider where the shooting location is in regards to where you live. Send them a recent picture as well. You may also wish to explain your prior experience within the spanking scene regarding play parties and private play too.
Additionally, be as cooperative and as open minded as you can with the director. Learn your lines and get to know your co-star the best you can. The stronger the chemistry between you and your co-star, the more successful the movie will be. Guys, it’s also important that you have an understanding as to what she’s comfortable with and what she’s not. If the only physical action in your video is spanking, then that is what you stick with. It is not an invitation for you to put your hands anywhere else on her body unless you and she have previously agreed to it before the filming begins. That is another big reason that communication is important. It’s perfectly understandable to feel nervous about filming for a company in which you’ve never worked for. Hell, I still get nervous when I’m working with people whom I’ve never shot with before. So, just try and relax and have fun.
From Anon: If you could be spanked by any movie actress, who would you choose?
If we are discussing mainstream movies, my choice is Angelina Jolie. In spanking movies and videos, I would say Chelsea Pfeiffer or Niki Flynn. I understand that both of these lovely ladies are well skilled with paddles, canes and straps. I’ve also noticed that Chelsea is pretty fast with a flogger as well. I wouldn’t mind submitting to another round while under the unforgiving and heavy hand of Betty Blaze too.
From Kerry: I’ve enjoyed your work as both a top and a bottom - which is your preference?
Thank You, It really depends on the type of scene and storyline at hand. I love having the opportunities of playing both roles equally.

And on another note it is great to see a man with submissive tendencies speak up and stand up and be counted. With out wishing to put ones foot in it, male spanking movie stars and men involved in the scene are on the whole under represented, in the spanking blogosphere.
I love reading all the blogs written by Mrs haze, Ms Flynns comments etc. But it does seem from the outside that men are a tool of the trade.
Also in relation to getting paid for being in films. I used to subscribe to Kane magazine and once had a letter from them asking if I wanted to model (it was just a circular everyone would have got one). The key point is that mine or anyone else’s prize for subjecting themselves to a vigorous CP session at the hands of the Ladies of Kane, was the “privilege of being allowed to breath the same air as them”. To my mind (and call me old fashioned) that’s a double standard that no woman in her right mind would agree to.
So my comment recently about “yeah I’d have a go” should probably have expanded to say “yeah I’d have a go if the price was fair”, along with safety and respect.
Flicking back to the Kane “model for free scenario”. Its my understanding from other discreet enquires in the past that quite often men are expected to model for free (in the UK), again based on the “your privileged to be in the same room as me, and you would be paying a Pro Domme £150 an hour or more for this service out in the world” but of course they get to sell your suffering on (double bonus).
Now as ever I’m willing to wrong (would like to wrong) but my gut says that male submissive Luminaries are going to be few and far between for a long time to come. And that in this one industry, the sex industry (loose term, except maybe in gay scenarios) men will always be an appendage (no pun intended) with far less opportunity to earn or be recognised unless they are the top and or business owner.
Final bit: Given that there is a female audience for visual, written material and blogs. Would a female audience like to know more about the male stars that they view on material they buy, (my gut says women communicate on a deeper level than men, hence openness on blogs, ergo probably yes), or is the material still far too weighted in favour of the male audience consumption for them to careless one way or the other?
Anyway, apologies Adele for taking up so much space, I just think that recently our world is coalescing and needs to get to know itself a little better, so it can be a lot better for everyone involved.

I kept my biz from my family for quite some time and it was very difficult. Once I finally told them, it changed our relationship for the better…once they got over the shock. Some family members still don’t know. Somehow, over they years, I’ve just learned who to tell and who not to. Also, I’d like to work with you sometime, too!

Graeme - yes, male stars are very rarely paid, and the reason is that a) few producers can afford it b) there are enough people who want to do it anyway. Of course, if you can afford to pay, you get better choice, but casting the women is a traditional priority.

(we spent a small fortune on costumes in Vegas the other week - the States have such fab costumes and so cheap!) AND we got a 40% discount on already cheap prices because we bought loads the day after Hallowe’en - go figure!
Your Stardust pics are a little piece of history. Paul and I were there when they closed it on the 1st November and believe it was being imploded this week. Another piece of original Vegas glamour gone to be replaced by yet another oppressive plastic mega resort no doubt :-(
