Ah, well – I quite often write long-hand. Couldn’t survive without it. Typing it up afterwards is boring, but a longhand first draft would need an edit anyway, so it’s convenient to see it with a fresh eye and make some changes on the fly.

Re your tweet on Longhand: If ever I write anything in longhand I have to copy-type it because no-one else can read my writing. But in copy-typing I compulsively rewrite the whole thing, changing it completely.

I’d be inclined to tell your mediaeval story “Look, my dear, I’m the one who’s writing you. So why don’t you just let me write you any way I can?”

Funny work is fuck. For someone from Yorkshire, it is instantly clear that Tennant isn’t, but I couldn’t explain how to correct him.

I once tried to correct someone from the USA who was saying ‘Nor-folk’ (with the L), but to my horror, ever afterward he said, strongly, ‘Nor-fuck’. It was quite impossible to explain what was wrong, mainly because we appear to have a special vowel sound for these counties in order to avoid saying fuck in any known accent.
