Intricacies of Party Etiquette
Scenology — By Adele on 4 September, 2006 10:29 pmSo, last week I posted about what you definitely shouldn’t do when you see a model at a spanking party. Such as, invade her personal space with your grubby forepaws.
Apparently, it’s not just at fetish events that people don’t get the don’t grope anybody without invitation rule. The same weekend as the Shadow Lane party there was another big convention going on: the LACon, that is, the World Science Fiction Convention in LA. And you know what? There’s a great old scandal going on in the fandom, because an old git of a writer found it necessary to paw the great Connie Willis’s chest: on stage, in the middle of an awards ceremony.
(You can watch the mess unfold from the first report, or just go straight for the compedium of comments on the subject.)
I would like to know the comparative chances of a groper being (actually or figuratively) kicked in the nuts at a fetish event and a fannish event. I’m only guessing, but I think there’s a greater tradition of calling creeps on their creepy behavious in the taboo little world of ours, than there is in the fields that are supposed to be (if only slightly) more respectable.

i reacon your more likely to get groped by somone whos a “fan” because those types of events dont tend to get the screening that fetish ones do. or at least i believe they do. if they dont then they should be :P. however at a fetish even the girls/guys tend to have more “spunk” so your likely to fight back.
i think my point there is that your more likely to damage them than a science fiction writer. although groping someone in the fetish buisness would be more damaging for the reputation of higher up people (like the writers)
god thats a hard one. lol. ah well, all i can say is that if anyone gropes me i wouldnt be best pleased and my girlfriend wouldnt be happy either. then theyd be in a mess! ;)
i hope that didnt confuse you as much as it confused me trying to write it. and i hope you see my point. kinda… :S
nice one with the alternative text for your links btw! “Connie Willis is great” and “He’s a git” for that Harlan mans. hehe, made me giggle, straight to the point!
I see your point, Nick. I’m sure that a science-fiction writer could do as much damage to a groper as a scene girl, but I guess the writer also has to consider whether a scandal that follows is worth it. A scene girl doesn’t really have to worry about it.
“Model X kicked Guy Z in the balls” story is less of a story than “Famous Writer Injures Colleague.” Lots of people would probably cheer, but she’d probably have to live with this scandal for a very long time. (Not sure it’s a bad thing. Just a thing to consider.)
yeh it wouldnt be as fun a story.
i just dont understand why people cant just keep to themselves. i mean i know life would be boring without all the cock ups every now and again but i mean ruining your own career and the other persons just to touch them up is just plain idiotic!
