The Cost of Porn-Making

Scenology, Shooting Films — By on 17 October, 2007 10:00 pm

I often have fantasies about films I’d like to act in if a spanking producer would make them. Just as often, people ask me why I don’t pull together a production company of my own, and shoot them myself.

Well. Quite apart from the fact that I have the business sense of a dragon-fly, and similar organisation skills, the main factor is that shooting your own porn is too bloody expensive.

Here’s a very pertinent quote from Trixie, a porn producer and model I admire, on the costs of her recent shoot:

Created:
906 photos in five different galleries, 45 minutes in 3 JO (jack-off) videos

Costs:
$186 – room
$110 – four pairs of inexpensive shoes
$100 – legwear and hosiery accessories
$170 – other bargain-hunted clothes, panties, and bras
Total: $566

Average approximate cost per photo: $1.60

Note: these are all approximations. I didn’t account for the cost of our cosmetics, lights, camera, camcorder, memory cards, tapes, luggage, or time. The total number of pictures is inaccurate since we won’t actually use all of those photos; some of them will be junked. Considering these factors, the average cost per photo is actually grossly underestimated. On the other hand, many elements of our “costumes” will be used over and over again, or have already been used in other shoots, so figuring in their total cost for this shoot is an overestimation. I also didn’t average in the video production, although the videos probably have greater potential for sales.

I just took a peek at Trixie’s site.
She’s as sexy as she is savvy in business. Her financial figures are quite accurate for a typical video shoot (spanking or regular sex) on this side of the Atlantic pond. One attribute about male models is that we are more cost effective. Legwear, hosiery and cosmetics are not items that have to be factored in when one adds up the figures where a male model is concerned. That includes wardrobe as well. After I’m sent a basic outline for the shoot in question, I just pack a couple of suits, shirts, jeans or what have you as the producer indicates and requires.

I like how outspoken Trixie is on her blog. She doesn’t skirt the issue in question and tells it like it is. A most admirable quality I feel.

Adele, I hope all is well with you and your’s.
    Talk to ya soon.

Thanks for posting this Adele. These figures are extremely interesting to know. I’ve often wondered how some spanking sites could maintain a profitable business model, nevermind full-time webmasters or employees, especially considering spanking films might be considered somewhat excentric.

I’ve seen one spanking site advertise the fees that were paid to the models and they were far less than what I would have imagined. I don’t really see how anyone could get in the business simply for the money.

    Very funny budget! lol
I have had lots of photo sessions, and I dont buy shoes or clothes for the shoot, I have the model undress.
Well, I have invested in some inexpensive but very adequate costumes for nuns, the old times peasant girl, the Lady. But as with cameras and lamps and PC, that is a one time investment. And I use the studio in my home.
Model expenses is what may make the difference, pay and travel expenses. And for a spanking video that must cost a lot, no?
    :-)

Very interesting topic Adele! :D Though it’s definitely true that every single company has different expenses from others just in the varying rates of pay for models alone before taking into account those who outsource some of their work (advertising/camera/sound/editing) rather than do it in house. Some have access to their own studios, some need to hire venues. So I imagine there are lots of anomolies and no two spanking companies have the same costs. Our biggest outlay for shoots is far and away model fees and expenses but it’s surprising how other costs mount up too along the way! I will certainly contribute to the discussion with a breakdown of typical shoot costs for NSI but our last shoot would be unfair since we flew a girl over the Atlantic for it which heffed up the costs quite considerably! Will look at a more typical one and provide some info in next few days for those interested. Perhaps I should do it on the next shoot too which hopefully will be before the end of this year and hopefully will also include you in the cast!
